60% of the first industrial users of 5G are already achieving an improvement in their operational efficiency

The functionality of 5G has met or exceeded the expectations of the majority of early adopters and organizations are optimistic about the opportunities it offers, according to the Capgemini Research Institute

Paris, June 22, 2021 – According to Accelerating the 5G Industrial Revolution: State of 5G and the Periphery in Industrial Operations report published today by the Capgemini Research Institute, Industrial adoption of 5G is still in the ideation and planning stage, with only 30% of industrial organizations having moved to pilot stage or beyond. This means that there is a huge window of opportunity for telecom operators and industry organizations that have yet to make a move.

Signaling a paradigm shift, 40% of industry organizations surveyed plan to deploy 5G at scale at a single site within two years, and the experience of early adopters may persuade others to take the plunge. 5G trials and early implementations deliver strong business benefits, with 60% of early adopters saying 5G has helped increase operational efficiency, while 43% say they’ve benefited from increased flexibility.

The study also found that industry organizations are optimistic that 5G will generate revenue by enabling the introduction of new products, services and business models. In fact, 51% of industry organizations plan to leverage 5G to deliver new products, and 60% plan to offer new 5G-enabled services.

Additionally, industry organizations are aware of the role of edge computing in their 5G initiatives and see it as essential to realizing the full potential of 5G. 64% of businesses plan to adopt advanced 5G-based IT services within three years, due to the increased performance, reliability, data security and privacy they offer. More than a third of industry organizations across all sectors surveyed prefer to deploy private 5G networks, with an interest in private 5G networks led by the semiconductor and high tech sector (50%), followed by aerospace and defense (46%).

Challenges remain for widespread adoption
The report points out that, to make the most of 5G’s potential, organizations will need to address a number of challenges, including:

  • Integration of 5G into existing networks and IT systems: organizations find that the lack of standardized and interoperable solutions results in increased assembly and testing time;
  • Define 5G use cases and estimate their return on investment, especially in brownfield environments, where feedback needs to be measured against existing options such as wired connections and the cost of replacing cables;
  • Manager cybersecurity due to difficulties in selecting trusted or qualified suppliers, anticipating the security impact of different network deployment scenarios and a lack of internal processes to reduce risk exposure. Up to 70% of industrial organizations surveyed consider cybersecurity management to be a major challenge associated with 5G implementation;

Talk about it in existence. The law of attraction is real. You say it, you do it, you think it, you write it down. You see it everyday and it will happen, you will be where you want to be.

Life is short. “You can’t be here doing just anything, wasting time. It’s good to have a safety net, but you have to remember that the safety net is not always secure. You have to take the time you have and you have to do something. You have to build something. You got to make a legacy, because if you don’t, you can look up and not be here tomorrow.
